What Is the Parent Boost Visitor Visa?

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa, applicants must:

  • Be outside New Zealand when applying and when the visa is granted.
  • Meet character and health requirements.
  • Be sponsored by an adult child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds or show their sponsor meets income requirements.
  • Show they are a genuine visitor with ties to their home country.

Key condition:
Applicants must not have any dependent children.

Application Process

Successful applicants will receive an approval in principle and will need to:

  • Provide evidence of 12 months’ acceptable insurance coverage.
  • Sign a declaration acknowledging the temporary nature of the visa and understanding of all conditions, including the requirement to leave before the visa expires.

Once granted:

  • Visa holders must arrive in New Zealand within 6 months of approval.
  • The 5-year stay begins from the date of first arrival.
  • Parents and their partners can travel separately and freely enter and exit New Zealand during the visa period.
  • After 3 years (but before 4 years), a compliance check must be completed, including a new medical certificate and proof of continued acceptable insurance.

Health and Insurance Requirements

Applicants must meet an acceptable health standard, with no medical waivers allowed.

  • Insurance must be valid for the entire duration of stay.
  • Evidence of 12-month insurance must be provided within 3 months after receiving approval in principle.
  • Insurance from approved providers outside New Zealand is accepted.

⚠️ Failure to maintain insurance may lead to visa cancellation, deportation, or ineligibility for future visas.

Financial Support Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following:

  1. Sponsor’s income
    • Single sponsor: At least the median wage (currently NZD $69,804.80 per year).
    • Joint sponsors: Combined income of at least 1.5 times the median wage (currently NZD $104,707.20 per year).
    • Additional parent: +0.5 times median wage (NZD $34,902.40 per additional parent).
  2. Parent’s ongoing income
    • Single parent: At least NZD $32,611.28 per year.
    • Couple: At least NZD $49,552.88 per year.
  3. Parent’s available funds
    • Single parent: At least NZD $160,000.
    • Couple: At least NZD $250,000.
      Funds must genuinely belong to the applicant—borrowed or gifted money does not qualify.

Sponsorship Requirements

  • Sponsors must be adult children (18+) who are New Zealand citizens or residents.
  • Joint sponsorship options include:
    • An adult child and their partner
    • Two adult children (siblings)
    • An adult child of the parent and an adult child of the parent’s partner.
